Building beyond the interface.

A product is more than the screens people interact with. It's the system of decisions, journeys, and outcomes behind them.

It's easy to think about product design in screens.

A homepage.

A dashboard.

A checkout.

A settings page.

But people don't experience a product as individual screens.

They experience a journey.

Start with the goal

Before thinking about the interface, I want to understand what someone is actually trying to accomplish.

What are they trying to do?

Why are they doing it?

What's preventing them from doing it today?

And what does the business need from the experience?

These questions often reveal problems that a polished interface alone can't solve.

Design the journey

A good screen can still be part of a bad experience.

The user might understand what to do on one page but become confused about what happens next.

They might have too many choices.

They might have to repeat information.

They might reach the right destination through a unnecessarily complicated path.

That's why I think about the connections between screens as much as the screens themselves.

The journey is the product.

Consider the business

Product design also has to work beyond the user's immediate experience.

There are business goals, technical limitations, timelines, content requirements, and operational realities.

A solution that looks great but can't realistically be built or maintained isn't necessarily a good product solution.

The strongest decisions usually happen where user needs and business constraints overlap.

Design the decision

Instead of asking:

What should this screen look like?

I try to ask:

What does the user need to understand here?

What decision are they making?

What information do they need?

What happens after they decide?

Those questions tend to produce better interfaces because the interface is no longer the starting point.

It's the result of understanding the problem.

Good product design isn't just abo
