What designing for a living has taught me about staying curious.

I used to think becoming a better designer meant getting better at design.

Better layouts.

Better typography.

Better interfaces.

Better tools.

But the longer I work, the more I realize that curiosity might matter more than any individual skill.

Keep experimenting

Some of the things I make are useful.

Some become portfolio pieces.

Some are just experiments.

A component might turn into a product.

A random interaction might become part of a bigger project.

A side project might teach me something that never appears in the final work.

Not everything needs to have a clear outcome.

Sometimes the value is simply discovering something new.

Learn unfamiliar things

Design rarely stays inside one discipline.

You might need to understand development.

Then motion.

Then content.

Then marketing.

Then how a CMS works.

Then how the thing you designed actually behaves when someone uses it.

I've found that learning outside my immediate role often makes me better at my actual role.

The more perspectives you collect, the more connections you can make.

Failed ideas still count

Not everything works.

Some concepts look better in your head.

Some experiments never become finished products.

Some designs need to be thrown away.

That doesn't necessarily make them wasted work.

A failed experiment still tells you something about what doesn't work.

And sometimes that's enough to move the next idea forward.

Don't chase a fixed definition

I don't think I need to decide exactly what kind of designer I am and stay there forever.

Product designer.

Visual designer.

Framer developer.

Creative thinker.

Builder.

The boundaries can move.

What matters more is continuing to learn, make, question, and explore.

Because design keeps changing.

And I want to keep changing with it.

Maybe staying curious is more valuable than having all the answers.
